The Las Vegas Walk of Stars® was developed in cooperation with Clark County, which sanctioned four miles of sidewalk to the East and West of Las Vegas Boulevard South between Sahara and Russell. Similar to the “Hollywood Walk of Fame,” the Las Vegas project honors people of prominence in a variety of fields including entertainment, sports, literary, humanitarian, civic, military, and pioneers. Each star will be a three feet square slab of polished granite weighing 180 lbs. and inlaid with the recipient’s name and specialty. As many as 3,000 stars could eventually be installed. This would be the ultimate tribute that Las Vegas could bestow on the man named “The Entertainer of the Century” in 2000. The “Viva Las Vegas!” fan club has stepped up to sponsor this star. Read our nomination below. This has been confirmed by the LVWOS committee; we have only a short time to raise the sponsorship fee of $15,000. We know that we can make this happen; there are Elvis fans all over the world. You can be a part of this and feel justifiably proud of it! Please note that your donation is completely tax deductible; the Las Vegas Walk of Stars is a non-profit organization. (tax #71-0946230) The star will be located at the Riviera Hotel on Las Vegas Blvd. This is the closest casino to the Hilton (on Paradise Rd.), where Elvis performed his record-breaking shows. It also seems fitting to have his star placed near Liberace’s on the sidewalk, since the both of them were friends and shared the affinity of spectacular entertainment. Our goal is to have the ceremony and star installation in September 2008. This fund-raising effort is entirely organized by fans and supported by fans. What were Elvis Presley’s contributions to Las Vegas? Elvis did try to bring rock n roll to the strip in 1956. That ended up making no impact on Vegas, but Vegas certainly made an impact on Elvis. When he returned to the stage in 1969, Elvis was able to bring rock n roll to Las Vegas, to the strip, and into the hotels. People came from all over the world to see him. Elvis had an onstage style that other entertainers admired. Elvis was the first performer to consistently sell out the largest showroom in “Entertainment Capital of the World.” A contribution that’s barely acknowledged was Elvis’ charity to Las Vegas.
